Hallelujah! Roe v. Wade has been overturned, opening up the possibility of legal protection for the unborn for the first time in 50 years. But while Catholics and people of good will everywhere are celebrating today, it’s important to remember we still have a long way to go.
The Supreme Court finally overruled its 1973 verdict on Friday in the now famous Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. But it has yet to revisit the likewise devasting 1982 case, Haugen v. GIA Publications, which allowed for clapping during Mass. Undoubtedly, we should praise Friday’s decision to end Roe, which mandated legal abortion all across the United States and led to the deaths of over 63 million babies. But we must remember that Dobbs’ ruling only returns the issue of abortion to the legislators of the States, most of which still have no plans to outlaw applauding after a good homily.
Political commentators have noted a massive mobilization among the left to keep abortion legal in most States, and possibly even require it under Federal Law. But the fact that there hasn’t been a corresponding mobilization against priests thanking the choir with applause shows just how difficult the road ahead will be.
So, in a word, put two hands together for yourself and all those who helped bring our nation to this historic point! But, don’t let the celebration distract you from the work that really matters come this November.
